When I arrived in Porto during the late afternoon on a summer day the golden hues of the setting sun cast a glow over the cityscape. After settling into my cozy AirBnB, I stepped outside and was immediately greeted by the breathtaking sight of one of Porto’s iconic bridges spanning dramatically across the Douro River. As I made my way towards the bridge, its elegant arches seemed to form a perfect union between the two hillsides that define Porto’s landscape. I couldn’t help but admire the beauty of this gorgeous city.
As captivating as Porto’s architecture is, the food is equally as delicious. It’s a vibrant mix of flavors, drawing inspiration from its rich coastal history, fertile lands and cultural diversity. From traditional Portuguese taverns serving hearty comfort food to innovative eateries redefining local cuisine, Porto offers a culinary story that mirrors the city’s colorful and dynamic character. To start my journey, I listened to a few local recs and followed my nose + cravings for the rest. Here are 8 amazing restaurants in Porto you don’t want to miss!
1. Tapabento
I had one of my favorite meals in Porto at Tapabento. Upon walking in you will notice the colorful, creative and eclectic decor that lets you know the food will take the same approach. With a diverse menu celebrating local and international cuisine, there is something for everyone. Enjoy bruschetta, mushroom dumplings, unique toasts, tons of seafood options and risotto. Pair your meal with their perfectly chilled wine and cocktail options. I came at the end of their lunch shift and the owner graciously let me dine. If I were you I would try to go with some friends so you can try as much of the menu as possible!
Check their website as they close between lunch and dinner and are not open on Mondays and Tuesdays (I would have eaten here twice if this wasn’t the case!). Located in the famed São Bento train station, take a moment to traipse around after and enjoy one of the most beautiful coach stops in the world.
2. Taberninha do Manel
When I daydream of al fresco dining in Europe the vision is of hanging on the patio at Taberninha do Manel looking out to the Duro River. With its warm ambiance and rustic decor, it exudes a welcoming atmosphere reminiscent of traditional Portuguese taverns. The menu features an array of classic Portuguese dishes, showcasing their rich flavors and culinary heritage. From hearty stews to fresh seafood and flavorful appetizers you will find something to enjoy. If you like red wine don’t miss the Contraste by the glass crafted nearby in the Duoro Valley. Taberninha do Manel invites you to savor their cuisine in a relaxed and warm setting. Their tables fill up so make a reservation or going early to snag a table / put your name on the list.
3. Prova Wine Food & Pleasure
Speaking of wine Prova Wine Food & Pleasure is a gem tucked away on a side street waiting to whisk you away with their fabulous wine choices. You have your pick of almost anything you’re craving, and it is a good chance to window shop and learn about new local dishes. At Beira Rio you’ll find diverse food options including traditional Portuguese dishes, international cuisine, and artisanal specialties. From freshly caught seafood and grilled meats to gourmet sandwiches, decadent pastries + inexpensive wine and beer. Don’t miss their outdoor patio! 6. Café Santiago
If you are collecting local food recs, chances are someone has mentioned Café Santiago. They are famous for serving the iconic Francesinha Sandwich which originated in Porto. This hearty sub consists of layers of bread, cured meats, and steak, smothered in melted cheese and a spicy tomato-based sauce. The atmosphere at Café Santiago is typically lively and bustling, offering a quintessential Porto dining experience. Admittedly I did not eat this sandwich as I don’t eat meat and food like this makes me too full. However, I felt your 8 amazing restaurants in Porto guide should provide this suggestion, as I know many foodies have this Portuguese sandwich on their food bucket list. Go nuts and let us know what you think!
*Pro tip ~ if you don’t eat meat and are dying to try this sandwich look up a restaurant that serves the plant-based version, Santa Francesinha is highly recommended.
7. Sandeman
Ok, here I am going to divert a bit. If you like wine and are visiting Porto, I think a Port wine tasting is a must. Port wine is not my favorite spirit, but I did want to learn more as I was in the motherland. Sandeman is a historic port wine producer that dates back to 1790 and was founded by George Sandeman. The company has played a significant role in shaping the port wine industry, becoming known for its high-quality wines and iconic branding. A fantastic activity is booking a winery tour and Port wine tasting at Sandeman. Afterward, enjoy typical Portuguese fare and a Port spritz at their restaurant. I ended up appreciating Port wine more after this tasting and my favorite use is in a Port Tonic cocktail!
8. Sagardi Porto
I am a sucker for seeing all food options and then getting to pick what I want based on what looks good. At Sagardi Porto they are serving pintxos which are a Basque specialty similar to tapas. They are usually served on bread or skewers and pair perfectly with a glass of wine. All the daily pintxos options are displayed in their lovely deli case, it’s a feast for the eyes! Pick what you want, enjoy and pay at the end. They have plenty of options for any dietary restriction, come hungry as it is hard to eat just a few. Sagardi Porto captures the essence of Basque cuisine, inviting eaters to savor the culinary traditions of Northern Spain in the heart of Porto. Come for the snacks and wine, stay a while!
Diversity in Porto’s Food Scene
As you can see there is great diversity in Porto’s food scene. I had a fabulous time following my senses to the tastiest food around town. These 8 amazing restaurants in Porto will surely bring you joy & satisfaction. When you arrive, they will help you hit the ground running with immediate culinary success. An honorable mention is The Royal Cocktail Club for a classy and sophisticated nightcap (they were mentioned in The World 50 Best). This bar is also perfectly appointed on one of Porto’s most lively streets for nightlife. I hope you have as much fun as I did discovering Porto and all it offers!
With love, Bekah
