Welcome to the hot summer tips you need now for Apulia! Unless you have been hibernating from Instagram, you have probably noticed the Apulia region of Italy becoming increasingly popular. I like to get to places before they blow up, so in 2019 I headed to the boot heel. Nestled along Italy’s sun-kissed Adriatic coast, this region beckons with its intoxicating blend of azure seas, ancient history, and culinary delights. The down-to-earth tiny towns of Apulia are a real departure from the feel of Rome, Milan and Venice. We made this list of the most important tips you need so you can get straight to the good stuff while discovering the other side of Italy.
Since Apulia’s authenticity remains untarnished by mass tourism, you can immerse yourself fully in its cultural treasures and natural wonders. I want to point out that I did this whole trip alone as a female solo traveler. I felt safe in all the little towns, staying out late and walking home at night.
1) Renting a Car
The most important of these tips is, renting a car! To truly savor the beauty and charm, renting a car is not just convenient- it’s essential. Apulia’s allure lies in its diversity, from Salento’s sandy beaches to the Gargano Peninsula’s rugged beauty. Public transportation options are limited and often infrequent. Renting a car is the best way to experience the region at your own pace. You can base in a city for a few nights while doing day trips all over. Traveling light with a daypack will add a carefree spirit to your adventures. I realize I need 2-3 days in one location to not lose my mind with all the lugging and packing.
Many of Apulia’s treasures, like the ancient village of Sassi di Matera, the whitewashed streets of Ostuni, or the medieval town of Castel del Monte, are tucked away in rural areas. A car allows you to venture off the beaten path and discover these hidden gems. Those relying solely on buses or trains easily miss the real treasures. Small villages and towns, which are the essence of Apulian culture, are more accessible by car. Interacting with locals in these areas often leads to memorable experiences, from sampling homemade cheeses to participating in local festivities. A car allows for spontaneous stops at roadside markets, vineyards, or viewpoints that catch your eye along the way. To avoid backtracking, I rented a car from Maggiore in Brindisi and returned it in Bari. These are excellent hubs for boat arrivals, airports and rental car agencies.
Fun fact ~ Brindisi was an important meeting and departure point for the Crusaders during the 11-13th centuries. Here they waited for boats to transport them across the Adriatic Sea and onward to the Holy Land. I loved diving into some rich European and Roman history upon arrival!
2) Boat In and Fly Out
Speaking of boat arrivals, who doesn’t like to add adventure to their adventure? Starting your trip on the Greek island of Corfu allows you to boat in and fly out of Apulia. When I built my 2019 trip from Albania to Corfu to Apulia, I was delighted to see the boat rides in my future. You can catch a 6-8 hour ferry from Κέρκυρα, Corfu to Brindisi, Italy. Anytime I can cut down on airport travel days, sign me up. Taking in landscapes from the water is one of my favorite modes of transport and adds mystery to the journey. Experiencing the Ionian Sea in this way, on a hot summer day is a memory I hold near and dear. Brindisi is also the perfect city to rent a car for the rest of your Apulia trip.
Spoiler alert, Corfu is a magical Greek island that should not be missed. It is outdoorsy, historic and rugged while traditional Greek hospitality is a stone’s throw away. 3) Shoulder Season
Another tip you need, shoulder season! Shoulder season in the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October), is ideal for visiting Apulia. This is due to milder weather, perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities. If you visit in the summer, be prepared to take breaks during the day while searching for some AC. During shoulder season this area is less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed and authentic experience in popular destinations. Tour towns like Alberobello, Lecce, and Ostuni with more ease.
As this region continues to grow in popularity, prices are increasing. During the spring and fall, travel costs are generally lower compared to peak summer months. This offers better value and more accommodation and dining options. The natural landscapes, from blooming spring wildflowers to the harvest season in fall are particularly beautiful during these times. Additionally, local festivals and cultural events often take place in non-summer months. Getting to some of these will provide a deeper insight into Apulian traditions and lifestyle.
4) Negroamaro Wine
I was quite a few days into my Apulian adventure before getting tipped off to the local wine, Negroamaro. Better late than never, but I really could have used a few more days with this delicious treat. Negroamaro is one of Apulia’s most cherished wines, celebrated for its deep color, rich flavors, and historical roots. Translating to ‘black bitter’, this reflects its dark, almost black hue and distinct taste. This wine typically exhibits flavors of dark berries, with hints of spice, earth, and a slightly bitter undertone. To me it’s a rich and unique blend of sour and fruity notes without being overly sweet.
This grape variety has been cultivated in Apulia for centuries, particularly thriving in the Salento peninsula. The region’s hot, sunny climate and limestone-rich soils create ideal conditions for growing Negroamaro. These aspects contribute to its intense and concentrated flavors. Negroamaro’s bold character pairs well with rich, hearty dishes. It complements traditional Apulian cuisine such as orecchiette with tomato sauce, grilled lamb, and aged cheeses. This variety has even gained international recognition for its quality and distinctive taste. Ever since my Apulia trip, I buy a bottle when I see it. It’s still under the radar which makes for a fun treasure hunt!
5) Orecchiette alle Cime di Rapa
To round out the Apulia tips you need now, let’s talk about food! Another local masterpiece I wish I learned about on day 1 is Orecchiette alle Cime di Rapa. This translates to ‘Orecchiette with Turnip Tops’ in English. This traditional dish is a culinary emblem of the region. It features small, ear-shaped pasta tossed with tender turnip greens, garlic and chili flakes often topped with grated Pecorino cheese. What is not to love about that?

This dish highlights the use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients and traditional cooking techniques. It’s a beloved comfort food that reflects the region’s agriculture and the influence of Mediterranean flavors. I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t mention this as one of the most important Apulia tips!
*Pro tip ~ Ask a handful of locals the best place to get this dish and visit the highest rated trattoria. With a glass of Negroamaro of course, 😉.

PS ~ The most dangerous part of this trip was driving on the Italian freeways. The locals drive incredibly fast and you have to do the same to not get run off the road. If you know you know, 😂. Don’t be scared, but you are warned.
